Brogan Bertie paints from life. He sits with his subjects and works in thick, physical oil paint, catching them mid-thought rather than posed. The results are honest rather than flattering: uneven light, real tension, real tenderness.

The show's title nods to that kind of closeness: you don't need to fully understand someone to see them clearly. You just need to be near enough to catch the light they give off. That's what these portraits are after.

This is Bertie's first solo exhibition at TKE Studios.

ABOUT BROGAN Brogan Bertie (b. 1995, South London) is a painter based in Margate. He graduated from London College of Communication in 2019 with a BA (Hons) in Illustration and Visual Media, then worked in freelance illustration and animation before moving to Margate to train in leatherwork with Cope Studio.

Bertie paints from life. His portraits are intimate and energetic, built from thick, textural oil paint that gets at the complexity of human connection without smoothing it over.

Recent group exhibitions include Works on Paper, Quench Gallery (2024); Claude Cahun: Beneath This Mask, The Beaney (2023); and Y'all Better Quiet Down, Leslie Lohman Museum (2019).
